Re: Is it possible to hunt large animals iwth a hand gun?

Yes...
on the larger ones ..(you will need real golden ones (balls))
Rember ,,you will be doing this short range..
trying to take big game with a hand gun..
short barrel smaller cartage .
so ..shorter range..
stalking,, hogs ,,(they are not stupid
)
this is a subjuct ..that can go on and on..
but ..Yes you can do it..

Yes, lots of choices, more than you can shake a stick at...at LEAST.357 mag out of a 6-8 inch barrel...44mag is better. Also, 10mm, 454 Casull, 45 Long Colt (modern loads), .500 S&W, 475 and 500 Linebaugh, etc. are a few that I think of at the moment.

T/C Contenders and Encores: add 6.8 SPC, 30-30, 308, 300 Win Mag, 7.62x39, 357/44 B&D, 35 Remington, 41 mag, 45-70, etc., etc, etc.

My local gun dealer told me about a hunting program, where a guy dropped a moose from 200 yards with a scoped model 500, .50 cal mag.

Details? He shot the moose from 200 yards away, and it died. One shot. I saw a show where a guy shot a 2700 lb. Buffalo with a model 500. It dropped straight to the ground dead. So, yes, you can kill large game with a handgun.

Ruger Alaskan .454 Casull, baddest hand-cannon on the planet in my opinion.
(the snub-nose probably isn't ideal for hunting) But damn it's badass!
Every time I go to buy more PM's, I have to fight the urge to purchase this beohemoth instead...

I know, it has no function other than:

a.) getting that bear to stop chewing on your foot
b.) scaring an intruder so bad you you don't even have to shoot them.

But I still want one. Whats a belly gun?

the only ,,way ,yes they will work ,,note above post..20 yards,,that is only 60,some feet..and if ,,in a hunting thing and there is some game that will hunt you..again golden balls....
if you screw up ,you are lunch..if they screw up ,,they are lunch..
Ha..
(trying to stay on why this thread was started..)
you have to stick into its belly and then pull the trigger...Ha..
but true..

They're not great, but they're not that bad either. A guy at the range was hitting a chest-sized target consistently at around 20 yards.

The S&W 460 XVR is a mean machine, especially with it's distance capabilities. The 500, however, is the perfect "Holy crap that guy has a big gun" gun.

When I bought my model 500, nothing had been said of the coming .460. I would have rather gotten a .460, since you can shoot .454 casull, and .45 Colt rounds in it as well. That way you can do some cheaper range shooting, as opposed to the 500.

ditto..really short barrel hand guns really have no place ,,
hunting...unless ,,you are starving..then all the old rules
go out the window..
all I am trying to say..for your safety..the longer the barrel
,,look at my last posts..
If the s.h.t.f. there are some handguns ..cool..long range and able to take out game..
rifles for game ..best..
i think this is my last on this thread..
reason...

Maybe I got the thread off track, sorry.

For the record: You DO NOT want a snub nose revolver like I posted for hunting, for hunting the longer the barrel the better.

Also for the record: The revolver I posted is BAD-ASS!

Ruger does make the same revolver I posted but with longer barrels.

Sorry, I'll go away now.

every land animal on the planet has been killed with the 44 magnum.
Not my first choice for brown bear, but it has been done, and if that is what ya brung, that'll have to do.
Pretty common cartridge, easy to find at a country general store.
You can always load 44 specials to teach the kids and ladies to shoot. pretty good all around hangun caliber.

My brother has the 460 and the 500. They are both handfulls but a semi experienced shooter can handle them. You wouldn't want to shoot 100 rounds at the range with them but a few cylinders won't make you that sore(wrists, elbows).

Re: Is it possible to hunt large animals iwth a hand gun?

me and a few friends use to go out to the bush and hunt kangaroos and wild pigs with 9mm glocks.......been young and dumb was great fun. the bigger pigs needed a fair few rounds and can get quite ifffy when they start charging, keep in mind there was 5-6 of us so its definitely possible.

Re: Is it possible to hunt large animals iwth a hand gun?

44 Mag in a 6 in bbl is just fine for 200 lb Michigan Whitetail Deer. Will kill very cleanly if you place a good shot.....like bow hunting.....but if you do not hit a vital...they will go a long way....you may not recover the animal.

Handgun hunting should be strictly for folks that are very good at handgun shooting...if you can't hit a small pie plate at 20 yards off hand....do not use a handgun to hunt.

A lot of folks go into the field with a handgun and think it will kill like a rifle....it will not. A deer rifle will drop a deer in it's tracks with any reasonable shot....a handgun demands a very accurate shot placement.

44 Mag will kill just about any big game if you hit the heart/spine/brain...."Chest" "Lungs" Liver .....get ready to do some tracking.

Best big game up close gun = 12 ga slug.....they are 72 caliber without expansion...have 3000 ft-lbs energy....same as a 30.06 rifle. I shot a 220 lb buck at 100 yards this past fall with a Remington 870 Pump (Rifled bbl + Scope + Rem "Buckhammer" Slug)....went 15 yards with a massive hole in the heart...not a drop of blood on the ground.

Just ate a piece of his ass last night....very yummy!

In regard to the 44 Magnum - The 300 gr hornady XTP behind 18.5 grains of H-110 will drop a deer in it's tracks at 75 yards - as long as you get him in the sweet spot (or maybe just a little off the sweet spot).
